Biography
Dr. Byrne is an Associate Professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences (DPHS), and Department of Surgery, at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine; she is affiliated with the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Bioethics Program. Previously, she held positions at the University of Pittsburgh, Baylor College of Medicine and the Houston VA Health Services Research & Development Center of Excellence.
Dr. Byrne’s current research focuses on the areas of decision making, disparities, cancer, and patient/healthcare interactions. Dr. Byrne studies participation decision in cancer clinical trials and recently developed a patient-centered decision aid to help cancer patients (specifically minorities) make improved decisions about participation trials. Dr. Byrne has also developed a decision aid to improve patient decisions about lung cancer screening. Dr. Byrne investigators racial, ethnic, socioeconomic and point of treatment disparities in cancer diagnosis, survival and other outcomes using large merge databases and is disseminating these results in the neighborhoods that are most affected by these disparities. Other research involves cost effectiveness, HPV, Florida red tide decisions, contingent management, financial incentives, and program evaluation.
Dr. Byrne currently teaches Program Evaluation in the Master’s and PhD programs in the DPHS, and is Chair of the Curriculum Committee. In external activities, she serves as a grant peer reviewer for the Department of Veterans Affairs HSR&D program, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Science Foundation.
