Biography
The primary interests of Dr. Pileggi’s research lie in transplantation immunobiology, autoimmunity, beta cell replacement therapies, cellular therapies for regenerative medicine, and tissue engineering.
Over the last decade, Dr. Pileggi has carried on studies addressing the most challenging issues in islet cell transplantation and autoimmune diabetes, including cell processing and assessment, cytoprotection, immunomodulation, tolerance, xenotransplantation, gene therapy, tissue engineering and stem cell technology.
Dr. Pileggi also participates to the research and academic activities of the Clinical Islet Transplant Program at the DRI.
Member of numerous professional scientific organizations and serves as reviewer for numerous international scientific journals, research grant panel for international agencies, as well as member of the abstract review committee for several national and international scientific meetings.
Dr. Pileggi has authored numerous book chapters and scientific publications in peer reviewed journals in the field of beta cell replacement and cellular transplantation.
Dr. Pileggi obtained his M.D. degree and clinical training at the Division of Hepato-Pancreatic Surgery of the University of Pavia Medical School in Italy. Subsequently he obtained his Ph.D. degree at the Division of Experimental and Microsurgery of the Department of Surgery of the University of Pavia.
